Why We Suck: A Feel Good Guide to Staying Fat, Loud, Lazy and Stupid

Why We Suck: A Feel Good Guide to Staying Fat, Loud, Lazy and Stupid

Denis Leary

A satirical, uncompromising and highly provocative book by Denis Leary, comedian and stand-up artist, written in the form of a long, cynical, swearing and aggressive monologue that reads like an extended stand-up performance on paper.

Leary transforms into “Dr. Denis Leary” (with an honorary doctorate) and ruthlessly takes on American society in the early 21st century. He attacks almost everything: political correctness, oversensitivity, victim culture, obsession with diets and fitness, parents who declare their children “special” instead of admitting that they are just lazy or ill-mannered, celebrity culture, the media, politicians on both sides, the “woke” mentality, but also conservative hypocrisy. He does all this with black humor, exaggeration, and without any regard for the reader’s feelings.

The book is full of personal anecdotes from Leary’s life – from his Irish-Catholic upbringing in a Catholic school, through show business, to his everyday observations of American stupidity and complacency. There is no deep philosophy or structured argumentation here – the goal is to make the reader laugh at himself and society, to provoke and provoke anger or laughter (or both). The message is cynical: we're all fat, lazy, stupid and loud, so let's stop pretending we're not and enjoy it.

It was a New York Times bestseller in the US, and the audiobook (which Leary reads himself) was particularly praised for its authentic, raw expression. It's less well-known in the region, but it attracts fans of black humor and satirical prose in the style of George Carlin, Bill Maher or Chris Rock. If you like cheeky, politically incorrect humor that spares no one – this is the right thing.
