Gold is a novel by Jack London, first published in 1910. During London's lifetime, it was his most successful and best-selling novel.
The story begins in 1893 during the Yukon Gold Rush. The protagonist, Elam (nickname: Burning Daylight), is one of the most successful prospectors. He later becomes the owner of a mine and rises to become a successful entrepreneur, who goes to the New York Stock Exchange and is confronted there with a completely opposite attitude to life compared to his previous environment: contempt and cruelty. Eventually, together with his former secretary, he turns his back on that world and moves to a ranch with her.
