Mars

Mars

Asja Bakić

Asja Bakić's collection of short stories "Mars" relies on two common sets of associations that the "red planet" evokes in the pop-cultural imaginary.

On the one hand, these are the conventions of science fiction, which the author plays with in her stories, shaping dystopian worlds of the future, and on the other hand, it is the popular myth of Mars as a "masculine" planet, which is challenged by the feminist-profiled, combative, and sometimes dangerous heroines of her stories. But regardless of whether the future or the present is being discussed, whether the personal worlds of the characters or planetary problems are being thematized, the author's stories constantly shift perspectives and evade solid ground, and the preference for ellipticality and open-endedness is based on the belief that imagination is most active where questions begin.
