Glas naroda – album narodnih kola i pjesama

Vilko Sedlar-Spevec

A sheet music collection of folk songs and songs arranged for the accordion from the 1950s. It is intended for musicians, folklore groups and lovers of traditional music and preserves popular folk melodies in an accessible form.

Voice of the People – an album of folk songs and folk dances is a musical collection of traditional tunes and dance melodies adapted for playing on the accordion. The arrangement was prepared by Vilko Sedlar-Spevec, known for popularizing folk and popular music through numerous collections intended for amateur and professional musicians.

The edition was published by the Zagreb publisher Ratimir Prević, specializing in music publications, hymnbooks and musical collections. On the back of the booklet there is an advertisement of the publisher with the address in Medulićeva Street in Zagreb, which further confirms its character as a practical musical publication intended for a wide range of users.

The collection brings together a selection of folk songs and folk dances that were popular at parties, family gatherings and folklore performances. Musical notations adapted for the accordion enabled easy performance and learning of the melodies, which is why the publication was particularly useful for self-taught musicians and members of cultural and artistic societies.

Today, this edition is interesting as a music manual, but also as a valuable document of the times that testifies to the popularity of the accordion and printed folk music in Croatia during the 20th century. Due to its cultural and collector's value, it is attractive to fans of folklore, music history, and antique sheet music.
