Fran Galović

The Enchanted Mirror is a psychological novella by Fran Galović about a young intellectual torn between reality and his own perceptions. The motif of the mirror becomes a symbol of self-knowledge, illusion, and spiritual disintegration.

The Enchanted Mirror by Fran Galović is one of the most distinctive Croatian modernist novels. At the center of the work is Marcel Petrović, a character whose inner drama takes place in an indefinite space between reality, dream, memory, and fantasy. The plot is not based on external events, but on a series of visionary encounters and conversations that gradually reveal the spiritual state of the protagonist.

Marcela first visits the image of his mother. In her conversation with her, she confronts memories, moral questions, and her own life choices. The mother's figure acts as a voice of conscience and the past, reminding him of the values he has neglected or lost. After that, a mysterious woman appears, whose role is more complex and symbolically more open. Her conversations with Marcela raise questions of love, longing, the meaning of life, and man's inability to achieve his own ideals.

The title mirror is not an ordinary object but the central symbol of the work. It represents a space of self-knowledge in which the boundaries between the external world and internal states are erased. Marcel does not only observe his reflection, but also his own past, desires and fears. The visions that surround him can be interpreted as real supernatural phenomena, but also as projections of his consciousness.

Galović builds the work on dialogues, symbols and atmosphere, and not on a classical plot. The novel explores the loneliness of modern man, the search for the truth about himself and the conflict between ideal and real life. Due to its introspection, symbolism and emphasized psychological dimension, The Enchanted Mirror represents one of the more interesting achievements of Croatian modernism and an example of prose that seeks to depict the inner, not the outer, world of man.
