Djela XI: Priče i impresije

Antun Gustav Matoš

The eleventh volume of the first edition of Matoš's collected works brings together stories and impressions that vividly illustrate the author's lyrical prose, psychological insight, and impressive descriptions of people, landscapes, and cities.

The eleventh volume of Stories and impressions is part of the first edition of the collected works of Antun Gustav Matoš, published in 17 volumes by the publishing house Binoza between 1935 and 1940. This volume contains short stories and impressionist writings that represent the pinnacle of Matoš's prose art and confirm his prominent role in Croatian modernity.

The book presents a selection of stories in which psychological analysis, symbolism, lyricism and refined narration are interwoven. Matoš's characters are often lonely individuals, artists, dreamers or people torn between reality and ideals, while the author shows their inner conflicts and emotional states with special sensitivity. In addition to short stories, the volume contains impressions - short prose writings inspired by travel, cities, nature, art and everyday scenes, in which the richness of language, imagery and exceptional power of observation stand out.

The volume was edited by Julije Benešić, while Milan Matoš collected and edited the writer's legacy, enabling the systematic publication of the first complete edition of Matoš's works. The collection provides a complete insight into the author's storytelling skill and impressionistic style, combining aesthetic sensitivity, intellectual reflection and distinct artistic precision. This edition remains an indispensable source for getting to know Matoš's prose and the development of Croatian literature at the beginning of the 20th century.
