Der Judasbaum

Der Judasbaum

Archibald Joseph Cronin

A. J. Cronin's poignant novel about a retired doctor, lonely in luxury, haunted by the guilt of a betrayal from his youth. In a futile attempt at redemption, he repeats the same tragic mistake.

"The Judas Tree" is one of A. J. Cronin's most powerful psychological novels, deeply exploring themes of betrayal, conscience, egoism and the possibility of redemption. The plot follows David Murray, a wealthy and retired Scottish doctor who lives comfortably in a luxurious villa on Lake Geneva. Despite his outward prosperity, David is haunted by a dark secret and a sense of guilt from his youth, when he abandoned his fiancée Mary, a simple girl from a working-class family, for his own comfort and ambition.

Determined to assuage his conscience, David returns to Scotland after many years to find Mary. He learns that she has died, but establishes contact with her daughter Kathy, a young and devoted nurse who reminds him very much of his mother. David offers her financial help and tries to take on the role of her benefactor in order to free himself from the burden of the past. However, his deep-rooted selfishness, weakness of character, and inability to make true sacrifices lead to a new chain of intrigue and tragic decisions, showing how the patterns of betrayal are inexorably repeated.

A. J. Cronin portrays with remarkable psychological precision the moral decline of a man who deceives himself. The symbolic "Judas Tree" in the novel serves as a reminder of betrayal and the inevitable consequences of one's own choices.
