Nije bilo uzalud

Nije bilo uzalud

Slavko Degoricija

Slavko Degoricija's memoirs provide authentic testimonies about negotiations with rebel Serbs and the creation of the Croatian state. The work reveals secret diplomatic processes and key political events from the early 1990s.

The book Nije bilo uzala vadu by Slavko Degoricija, one of the most prominent Croatian politicians and officials from the time of the creation of the independent Republic of Croatia, represents an extremely important political-memorial material. As the head of the Croatian Government's negotiating team in contacts with representatives of the rebellious Croatian Serbs and the international community, the author testifies firsthand to more than fifty secret and public meetings held during the period of the most intense aggression.

Through a detailed and readable narration, Degoricija reveals the background of political pressures, obstructions and strategies that came from Milošević's Belgrade, as well as the complex intra-party and state decisions of the Croatian leadership. The book is given special value by previously unknown details about the crisis negotiations, attempts to rescue prisoners (such as the case of Dr. Ivan Šreter) and the functioning of the Crisis Staff and the Ministry of the Interior.

The author's testimony is a victory of truth over oblivion and an irreplaceable source for researchers of the history of the Homeland War, offering insight into the enormous effort and political skill invested in the establishment of a sovereign state.
