Cigani A kategorije

Cigani A kategorije

Muharem Serbezovski

Gypsies of category A is a novel about the life and identity of Roma (Gypsies).

It is the second novel by the famous Romani singer, writer and intellectual Muharem Serbezovski (after Šareni dijamant (Colorful Diamonds) from 1983). The work deals with Romani identity, customs, beliefs, lifestyle and position in society. The author, who writes from the inside, offers an authentic portrayal of Romani culture, unlike non-Romani writers who often used Romani characters only as a coloristic element. The title Cigani A kategorije (Gypsies of the “A” category) alludes to the self-perception of many Romani people who consider themselves “first-class” or “better” Romani people. The novel explores themes of identity, pride, poverty, tradition and the aspiration for a better life within the Romani community.
