Iskre djetinjstva
The 1981 Osijek anthology features authentic poetic and prose works by elementary school students, preserving sincere childhood impressions of growing up, one’s homeland, friendship, and the world around them.
The 1981 anthology of youth literature, Iskre djetinjstva ("Sparks of Childhood"), serves as a comprehensive showcase of children’s poetry and prose from Osijek and its surrounding area. The editorial team collected and selected the finest works by schoolchildren—pieces created within the framework of school literary clubs and under the guidance of Croatian-Serbian language teachers—offering a glimpse into the creative potential of the young generation of that era. Through poems and short prose sketches, these young authors explore themes that resonate most deeply with them: the beauty of their Slavonian homeland, the process of growing up, the joys and concerns of school life, first loves, friendships, and their family environments. The works are marked by remarkable spontaneity, sincerity, and thematic diversity—ranging from simple vignettes of everyday life to more mature reflections on the adult world and the surrounding natural environment. Beyond serving as an encouragement and a form of validation for young talents at the time of its publication, this anthology now stands as a compelling cultural and pedagogical document. It bears witness to the language, sensibilities, and ways of thinking of children in the early 1980s, preserving from oblivion these authentic "sparks" of childhood—sparks ignited within the specific social and historical context of Osijek.
