Kritika #19

Kritika #19

Published during the Croatian Spring, this issue explores modern poetry, faith and the Church, alongside debates on Croatian cultural identity, literature and geographical names.

Issue 19 of Kritika, published in July–August 1971, combines literary interpretation, cultural controversy and religious debate. Appearing during the Croatian Spring, it reflects a period when language, national identity and cultural autonomy occupied a prominent place in public discussion.

The section Razumijevanje poezije examines approaches to poetry. Contributors include Radoslav Dabo, Vlatko Pavletić and Dubravko Ivančan, who discusses his haiku technique. Branimir Donat considers Nikola Šop, while Bratoljub Klaić explores lesser-known aspects of Tin Ujević. Ljerka Mifka and Marc Alyn also contribute.

A second thematic section, Kriza vjere i kriza Crkve, brings together Smiljana Rendić, Vjekoslav Bajsić and Daniel Bučan to address Christianity, contemporary life, Islam and ideology. Other contributions discuss music, literary value and Ujević.

Essays on the Croatian National Revival and geographical terminology place cultural interpretation within wider debates about collective identity. Literary reviews, criticism and poetry complete an issue that offers a varied record of intellectual life shortly before the suppression of the Croatian Spring.
