The soul of the West is older and wiser than we believe. In today's effort to regain the depths of the soul, it is therefore necessary to direct our attention to the blazing culture that lay on the other side of the Jewish-Greek horizon. In doing so, not only do we begin to renew our sense of our broader identity, but we also gain a more secure perspective on the path of development that we have slowly and relentlessly trod since those times. Egypt calls to us as a lost part of ourselves.

In trying to reach a new sensitivity to the spiritual powers that pervade our lives, Egypt inevitably comes into focus. We discover that there is a new and living dialogue between the barren spirituality of modern times and the spirituality of antiquity, the pre-Greek and pre-Jewish world. Perhaps we will realize in our modern way that we are entering a realm of experience with which the Greeks and the people of Israel felt uneasy, but with which the Egyptians were completely intimate. This is why continuing the dialogue with the ancient Egyptians is invaluable. Although their era has passed, they can still become our companions and guides if we dare to move towards our own future.
