Brightonski misterij

Sara Sheridan

The novel by the Scottish author is the first in a series of historical crime novels with the heroine Mirabelle Bevan. The story is set in Brighton, in post-war England characterized by rationalization, social inequalities and the hidden consequences of w

Mirabelle Bevan, a former Secret Service agent, tries to put her past behind her by working as a secretary in the debt collection office of charismatic Ben McGuigan. Her peaceful life is disrupted by the disappearance of pregnant Hungarian refugee Romana Laszlo, a client of the agency. When Ben suddenly disappears, Mirabelle teams up with a young and astute insurance agent, Vesta Churchill, to investigate the case.

Their investigation uncovers a web of fraud, illegal betting schemes, counterfeit gold coins, and murder. Mirabelle and Vesta face threats from Nazi war criminals and corrupt police officers, risking their own lives to uncover the truth.

The novel faithfully depicts the atmosphere of post-war Britain, including the racial and gender prejudices of the time. Mirabelle, intelligent and determined, with the help of Vesta, becomes a symbol of the fight against injustice in a society still recovering from the trauma of war.

The Brighton Mystery combines classic crime fiction with historical context, providing readers with a tense and emotional story of courage, friendship, and the quest for justice.
