The Old Man and the Sea is a novel by Ernest Hemingway, an American writer of the 20th century. Hemingway won the Pulitzer Prize for the novel in 1953 and the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954.
The book contains about twenty stories connected into one whole by the main character (the writer Oskar). It is, therefore, a kind of novel that, through intimate confessions, actually talks about the loneliness of the modern intellectual.
The novel is based on the writer's experiences in Shanghai during World War II and in the Civilian Collection Center in Lunghua, where he was interned from 1942 to 1945. Steven Spielberg made a film of the same name based on the script by Tom Stoppard.
