A Woman of Substance follows the epic rise of Emma Harte, one of literature's most famous heroines. The book is a saga of strength, determination, and female emancipation in a male-dominated world, rich in historical detail and complex characters.

The story begins in Victorian England, where young Emma, born into poverty, works as a maid for the wealthy Fairley family. Determined, ambitious, and intelligent, she refuses to accept the fate imposed on her by her social standing. After an affair with Edwin Fairley, which ends in betrayal and pregnancy, Emma flees to Leeds, determined to build a life of her own.

Through years of hard work, ingenuity, and sacrifice, Emma builds a mercantile empire, starting from a small shop to a chain of luxury department stores. Her success comes at the cost of personal loss, including bitter family conflicts and a battle against social prejudice. The novel spans decades, depicting Emma's struggle for power, wealth, and respect, as she faces betrayals, romantic disappointments, and revenge against the Fairleys.

In her old age, as a wealthy and influential woman, Emma reflects on her past, family, and inheritance, struggling with inner demons and the question of who will carry on her vision.
