Aleksa Šantić

The collection Selected Poems by Aleksa Šantić brings a representative selection of lyrics by one of the most important poets of Serbian realism and modernity.

The poems in this collection cover three thematic areas: love, patriotic, and social lyrics. In love poems such as “Stay Here” or “Emina,” Šantić expresses tenderness, longing, and silent suffering, often in an oriental tone influenced by sevdalinka and the Mostar of his time. Patriotic poems, such as “Moja otadžbina” or “Hljeb,” carry strong messages of pride, freedom, and resistance, especially in the context of Austro-Hungarian rule. Social themes bring concern for the disenfranchised and the working class, which is evident in poems such as “O klasu,” “Radnik,” and others.

Šantić’s poetry is imbued with strong emotions, social sensitivity, and a deep attachment to his homeland, people, and tradition. Šantić’s poetic expression is marked by melodiousness, pure language, and clarity of thought, and his poetry successfully combines folk tradition with modern lyrical sensibility. Selected poems are a valuable literary document that bears witness to the spiritual and social aspirations of a time and people.
