The novel Roots, published in 1976, is one of the most influential works of 20th-century American literature. Author Alex Haley spent twelve years researching his own family tree, combining oral tradition, historical archives, and genealogical data to reconstruct his ancestors' journey.

The story begins in the second half of the 18th century in the village of Juffure in West Africa (present-day Gambia), where we meet the young man Kunta Kinte. Kunta is a proud, educated young man preparing to enter adulthood when he is captured by slave traders. There follows a harrowing and brutal account of the transatlantic crossing under inhumane conditions aboard a slave ship bound for America.

Upon his arrival in Virginia, Kunta is sold and forced to accept the slave name Toby. Despite the harsh reality of slavery, the lashings, and attempts to suppress his identity, he never fully loses his spirit nor forgets his roots and African heritage. The story then unfolds through the lives of his descendants—his daughter Kizzy, his grandson Chicken George, and others—tracing their fates through decades of slavery and the American Civil War, all the way to final emancipation and the attainment of freedom.

Haley’s masterpiece is not merely the story of a single family, but a moving collective history of the African American people—their resilience, suffering, and indomitable hope.
