Radnja romana je smještena u Indiji. To je priča o lijepoj i razmaženoj Oliviji, koja se dosađuje u malom, zagušljivom gradu gdje njen suprug radi u državnoj službi, i koja zgražava ondašnje društvo napustivši muža zbog indijskog princa, te o njenoj praunuci po mužu koja se pedeset godina kasnije vraća u žegu, prašinu i prljavštinu bazara u Satipuru da bi riješila zagonetku Olivijinog skandala.
