Kristof Kolumbo i otkriće Amerike

Juraj Carić

A historical study by Croatian scientist and maritime publicist Juraj Carić, in which the author presents in detail the life, ideas and exploits of the famous navigator Christopher Columbus, as well as the historical context of his voyage in 1492.

The book not only provides a classic chronology of discoveries, but also offers a broader insight into the maritime ambitions of Renaissance Europe, the scientific knowledge of the time, and the political circumstances that made one of the greatest geographical discoveries in human history possible.

Carić particularly emphasizes Columbus's maritime skill and courage, but also his persistence in seeking support for the expedition. He describes in detail the conditions on the ships, navigation techniques, and erroneous geographical beliefs (e.g., underestimating the size of the Earth), which actually led to the "accidental" discovery of the New World. The book also explores Columbus's personality - between visionaryism, religiosity, and fanaticism - and the consequences of his voyage for European and American civilization.

Carić writes clearly, informatively, and with a sense of maritime tradition, bringing the reader closer to a complex historical period and a man whose ideas and undertakings changed the course of world history. The book is particularly interesting because of the author's maritime knowledge and Croatian perspective, which makes it a valuable contribution to the domestic historiography of great geographical discoveries.
