Roman prati petoricu bjegunaca iz američkog građanskog rata – inženjera Clydea Smitha, novinara Gedeona Spiletta, mornara Pencroffa, mladića Herberta i crnca Nabua – koji balonom bježe iz opsade Richmonda, ali ih oluja odnosi na nepoznati pacifički otok.

Njihov boravak na otoku prikazuje njihovu snalažljivost i znanstveni pristup preživljavanju. Grade sklonište, oruđa, pa čak i električnu energiju, koristeći prirodne resurse i znanje.

Otok, iako naizgled pust, skriva mnoge tajne – uključujući nepoznatu silu koja ih pomaže u opasnim trenucima. Kasnije otkrivaju da je ta sila legendarni kapetan Nemo iz Verneova romana Dvadeset tisuća milja pod morem, koji se skriva u svom podmornici Nautilus u skrivenoj pećini. Prije smrti, Nemo im prenosi mudrost i pomaže im preživjeti.

Na kraju, vulkanska erupcija uništava otok, ali skupinu spašava brod. Roman slavi ljudsku domišljatost, znanost i suradnju.
