In this book, seventeen short stories by Maupassant are collected, in which the origin and development of the writer's disease - his journey into darkness - are reflected.
Hence the collective title with which the translator wanted to emphasize that these novellas form a whole. Arranged as they were written, they form the best illustration of the writer's fate.
