Sofoklova Antigona jedna je od najvećih antičkih tragedija, a za Hegela i apsolutni uzor te dramske vrste.

Građa je uzeta iz mitskoga ciklusa o Edipu i prokletstvu Labdakove kraljevske kuće. No, Sofoklovi likovi nisu mitska bića kojima upravljaju bogovi, nego ponešto idealizirani karakteri čija se tragičnost ogleda u njihovim individualnim izborima. Na temelju motiva Antigonine ljubavi prema bratu i njezine želje da ga unatoč kraljevoj zabrani dostojno pokopa, problematizira se odnos pojedinca i društva, zemaljskog i božanskog zakona, dužnosti i ljubavi.
