Jednoga dana na obali mlada novinarka Theresa Osborne slučajno pronalazi poruku u boci. Potpisana samo slovom G, poruka je puna ljubavi i žala za preminulom suprugom. Pokazavši poruku svojim kolegama, Theresa i ne sluti kakve će događaje pokrenuti.

Pismo nepoznatog muškarca izlazi u sutrašnjem izdanju novina, a reakcije čitatelja, između ostalog, donose i dvije nove poruke u boci. Potaknuta emotivnošću autora, Theresa kreće u potragu, koja je ubrzo dovodi do privlačnog restauratora brodova, Garreta Blakea.

I doista, Garret još tuguje za svojom suprugom, a Theresa, i sama nesretna zbog nedavnog sloma bračne veze, pronalazi u Garretu muškarca svog života. No prošlost još uvijek stoji između dvoje nesretnih ljubavnika.
