Tihi Don III

Tihi Don III

Mihail Šolohov

The Silent Don is one of the most monumental works of world literature and cannot be subsumed under one genre.

It is primarily a historical novel, which depicts Russian society in one of the most important moments in the history of Russia — at the time of the Revolution of 1917. It is also political because it deals with political turmoil and conflicts between monarchists and communists. The largest part of the book is devoted to describing the Eastern Front at the end of the First World War and the civil war in 1917, as well as the arduous life of the Don Cossacks, and can be considered a war and social novel. The passions and emotional experiences of the main characters are described in great detail, so the Silent Don also has a psychological touch. The main motif of the novel is the unconventional relationship between Grigori Melekhov and Aksinja, which gives the novel a romantic character. Finally, the very title of the work hints that the writer pays special attention to descriptions of nature - the quiet Don and the peaceful steppe, indifferent to the difficult fate of the Cossacks.
