Der Roman U registratura ist Kovačićs bestes Werk, in dem er sich mit dem Problem des Übergangs vom Bauernstand zum Adelsstand beschäftigt.

Der Roman wurde 1888 veröffentlicht. Der Autor erzählt vom Schicksal der armen Ivica Kičmanović, die aus einem Dorf in Zagorje kommt, um in der Stadt zu studieren. Dreißig Jahre lang wurden Ivicas Kindheit, Jugend und frühe Reife bis zum tragischen Ende – dem Selbstmord im brennenden Standesamt – abgedeckt. Das Werk ist eine eigenartige Mischung aus Realismus und Fantasie, Naturalismus und Romantik.
