Religijske teme u književnosti (zbornik radova međunarodnog simpozija održanog u Zagrebu 9. prosinca 2000. )

Ivan Šestak

Unfortunately, over time, art (especially literature), at least in European history, became a separate sphere of cultural life, separated both from religion and from the world of ethical (humane) values.

The fact is that today's society is more and more like a ball that pulsates to the rhythm of consumption. God is just some marginal size, somewhere outside, pushed to the side. Who today, in the spirit of the times, is interested in the religious search for wisdom instead of dogma, mysticism instead of moralizing. Rahner's thought that the Christian of tomorrow will be a mystic or he will not be is widely quoted, even if it is not understood. However, we should certainly not forget about Kierkegaard's statement that if a man surrenders to the spirit of the times, he will quickly become a widower. In any case, we are convinced that in the future, both in the interest of the individual and in the interest of society, in its artistic field called literature, religion will remain a common intersubjective theme and source of humane ideas. It would be devastating if that were not the case.
