Clay Carter is a wasted attorney at the Washington Public Defender's Office when he takes on the case of a teenager who killed an acquaintance for no reason. Clay is approached by a mysterious stranger, the enigmatic Max Pace, who represents a mega-corporation that produces drugs that induce murderous urges in teenagers. The corporation will pay Clay $10 million if he settles with all the victims for $5 million per case and all is done in strict secrecy. After a brief examination of his conscience, Clay accepts the offer, quits his job and opens his office and closes all cases. As a reward, Pace presents him with a major case based on stolen evidence estimated to be worth tens of millions of dollars. A great career opens for Clay when he receives more than 100 million dollars in fees, buys a Porsche, a house in Georgetown and a personal jet. All this is not enough to forget the woman he loves, the woman who left him before his career took off, and his excessive self-awareness and extravagance will result in his entire future depending on one trial.
