William Lashner

All that Victor Carl is aware of at the moment is that he woke up on a hard concrete slab floor in the outer lobby of the building where he lives.

With a terrible hangover, a suit in rags, with a torn shirt pulled out of his pants and an untied tie, missing socks and with a sharp and burning pain in his chest. The pain comes from a fresh tattoo that he can't remember how he got it - a bright red heart tattooed with the name Chantal Adair, completely unknown to him. Who is Chantal Adair? The love of his life or just a terrible drunken mistake? Victor intends to find out, but right now he has bigger worries on his mind. His client, a fugitive whom the FBI has been looking for for years, intends to finally come out of hiding and return the Rembrandt painting stolen thirty years ago, not to mention the stolen jewels in Victor's possession. But Rembrandt's painting and the drawing on his skin may be more connected than Victor realizes. And the closer he gets to the solution that will bring the two together, the closer he is to becoming a live target. Because someone is not happy that the picture came to light. Or what the fugitive client threatens to reveal. Or that Victor is snooping around, looking for information on Chantal Adair. For years, William Lashner has deservedly held the status of master of the crime novel genre - thanks primarily to novels with the lawyer Victor Carlo as the main character, intelligent and witty, hardened and vulnerable, who always somehow manages to do the right thing - but for completely wrong reasons.
