Pavla je mlada književnica, ali po nuždi i spremačica u kazalištu. Jozef je stariji književnik, oženjen, ali nekoliko godina živi u paralelnoj ljubavnoj vezi s Pavlom. Lucka je njihova djevojčica. Međutim, na putu je još jedno dijete, a iz te situacije rađa se i kriza ljubavn(ičk)oga para... Suvremena češka spisateljica izgradila je ovaj roman na bilješci iz vlastite prošlosti, kriznome razdoblju u dugogodišnjoj vezi s književnikom Ludvikom Vaculikom (koji je kao protuodgovor napisao roman "Kako se prave muška djeca"), kojime na duhovit i ironičan način progovara ne vlastitoj intimnoj drami, ali i o društveno-političkom trenutku tadašnje komunističke Češk(oslovačk)e.
