During the Great Depression of the 1930s in America, fifteen-year-old Thea Atwell's family sends her to Yonahlossee, an elite girls' boarding school where, at least at first, the effects of the economic crisis are suppressed, and young girls are taught how to become "ladies". After a bad start, she manages to make friends with her peers. They all share a love for horses and riding.
