The story begins in the past, when three boys, playing in the forest, unintentionally cause an accident in which a little girl dies. This event, shrouded in mystery and guilt, binds them with an unbreakable bond, but also leaves deep emotional scars. Years later, now adults, their lives intersect again in Zagreb. Ante has become a journalist, Branko a police officer, and Cvjetko a petty criminal. Their pasts come to light when a series of mysterious crimes shake the city, and the clues point to an old accident.
Pavličić masterfully builds tension, intertwining the past and the present through the characters' perspectives. The novel explores themes of guilt, redemption, and the consequences of children's decisions. Each of the three carries their own burden: Ante struggles with moral dilemmas, Branko with professional pressures, and Cvjetko with a life of crime. Their friendship, once strong, is now fragile, imbued with distrust and secrets.
Through compelling dialogue and detailed descriptions of the Zagreb setting, Pavličić creates an atmosphere of suspense. The novel culminates in a dramatic resolution, where the truth about the past comes to light, forcing the characters to confront their own demons.
