Ivan Gundulić

Volume number 12 and 13 from the series "Five Centuries of Croatian Literature" is dedicated to Ivan Gundulić, one of the most prominent Croatian writers of the Baroque period.

Volume 13 of the "Five Centuries of Croatian Literature" series is dedicated to Ivan Gundulić, one of the most prominent Croatian writers of the Baroque period. This volume includes his most significant works: "Tears of the Prodigal Son", "Dubravka" and "Osman".

"Tears of the Prodigal Son" (1622) is a religious poem that deals with the biblical parable of the prodigal son from the Gospel of Luke. The work is divided into three "laments" or parts: "Sin", "Knowledge" and "Contrition".

Gundulić's most significant work "Dubravka" (1628) is a pastoral drama that celebrates freedom and an idealized image of Dubrovnik. The action takes place in the mythical land of shepherds and fairies, where the wedding of the beautiful fairy Dubravka and the shepherd Miljenko is celebrated. The work is an allegory of the freedom and prosperity of Dubrovnik, and through the characters and events Gundulić expresses his love for his city and homeland.
