Goldsmith's Gold, Šenoa's first and most famous historical novel, is considered the first modern novel in Croatian literature. August Šenoa himself is the most widely read Croatian writer of all time.
August Šenoa began publishing this extensive historical novel of his in 1880 in Narodne novine. Death prevented Šena from completing this work. Based on his writings, the novel was continued and completed by Josip Eugen Tomić.
