Metaphysik und Politik faßt den Kernbestand der Philosophie Joachim Ritters zusammen. Die Aneignung der Tradition der von Griechenland ausgehenden Metaphysik steht bei Ritter im Zeichen einer von Hegel herkommenden Interpretation der modernen Gesellschaft. Im Mittelpunkt steht eine Theorie des bürgerlichen Lebens, das in seiner modernen, durch die Französische Revolution begründeten Gestalt Herkunft und Zukunft miteinander zu vermitteln hat. Die Neuausgabe, die zum hundertsten Geburtstag des Philosophen erscheint, wird aus diesem Anlaß erweitert durch drei thematisch zugehörige Stücke, die dem Band Subjektivität entnommen sind. Damit sind die wichtigsten Arbeiten Ritters zur Philosophie der modernen Gesellschaft erstmals in einem Band vereinigt.
