Mladost ludost

Eugen Kumičić

The novel Youth-Foolishness (1884) depicts the lives of young people in Dalmatia at the end of the 19th century. Set in Zadar, the novel follows the fate of a young lawyer, Frano Luković, whose passionate nature and rash decisions lead to tragic consequen

Kumičić explores themes of youthful infatuation, love, ambition, and social pressures, criticizing the petty-bourgeois values and hypocrisy of society.

Frane, talented but impulsive, falls in love with the beautiful and ambitious Marija, the daughter of a wealthy merchant. Their relationship, marked by passion and disagreements, causes conflicts with family and society, especially due to Franje's inability to control her impulses. The novel shows how youthful naivety and lack of life experience lead to moral lapses, while Kumičić masterfully outlines the psychological portraits of the characters. In addition to Frane's story, the novel also brings a colorful gallery of supporting characters - from self-serving citizens to honest but powerless individuals - who depict the social mosaic of Dalmatia under Austrian rule.

Through vivid descriptions of the Zadar setting and realistic dialogue, Kumičić creates a convincing picture of the times, while at the same time warning about the dangers of unbridled youth.
