The collection contains short stories depicting the life of the Croatian nobility in the Croatian Zagorje region during the 19th century, focusing on their everyday life, customs, internal conflicts, and social decline.
Gjalski masterfully describes the nature of Zagorje, which becomes almost a character in the story, and subtly criticizes social changes, including the decline of the nobility and the loss of traditional values. The characters are often faced with existential questions, love dramas, or the conflict between the old and the new era.
