The book is a romantic-historical novel or collection of short stories set in a period of French history, probably the 17th or 18th century, with an emphasis on adventure, intrigue, and nocturnal conspiracies.
Benzoni, known for works such as Catherine, The Tragic Queen and Secrets of the Renaissance Courts, here creates a story about three protagonists – musketeers, noblemen or spies – whose destinies intertwine in a world of court intrigue, secret missions and forbidden loves. The novel is written in her signature style: rich descriptions of historical costumes, courts and battles, mixed with romantic melodrama and tense plots.
