Angela Merkel: kancelarka i njezin svijet

Angela Merkel: kancelarka i njezin svijet

Stefan Kornelius

Much is written about her, but little is actually known about Angela Merkel.

Stefan Kornelius, a journalist for the German daily Süddeutsche Zeitung, has followed her career since she appeared on the German political scene as a young girl 24 years ago. He has come to know her well, so he knows how she thinks and how she acts as a politician. Based on this knowledge, but also with the help of the Chancellor herself, he wrote this interesting biography of her, in which she is portrayed with exceptional precision from very different angles. In addition to describing her youth in the family of a Protestant pastor in communist East Germany, and her upbringing in the East German academic community, he explained her qualities that, after German reunification, led her first to the head of the largest German political party, and then to the head of the largest European economic power. The author also dealt in detail with her special affinity for the United States, described the complex relationship she developed with Russian President Vladimir Putin, and one of the most interesting parts is the one in which he explains how Angela Merkel changed the attitude of Germans towards their own past, especially when it comes to the Holocaust. Of course, there is also a description of the steps taken by Angela Merkel to strengthen Germany's position as the first country in the European Union.
