Nešto se dogodilo

Nešto se dogodilo

Joseph Heller

The novel "SOMETHING HAPPENED" is a characteristic, bizarre-witty mixture of the tragic and the comic, the everyday and the absurd, the sublime and the obscene.

While in the novel "Catch-22" - which Philip Toynbee called "the greatest satirical work in the English language since Erewhon" - the subject of the expose was war and military hierarchy, this novel could be called a tragi-grotesque of civil personal life in contemporary America. This novel is written in a temperamental confessional tone and in the form of an unsparing confession of Bob Slocum, a high-ranking official in an insurance company, who, despite material abundance, advancement in his career, and a rich family and sexual life, feels constant dissatisfaction, failure, and the meaninglessness of life. The novel is full of unexpected observations, grotesque humor, and unfettered honesty. In very simple and everyday situations, we discover the absurdity and tragedy of the human condition. The language is colloquial, unsentimental, often "peppery". The sexual life and exploits of the main character are described in particular detail, in memories from his youth and as a mature, formed man.
