Povijest hrvatske književnosti. Knjiga I. Od humanizma do potkraj XVIII. stoljeća

Branko Vodnik

The first book covers Croatian literature from humanism (15th century) to the end of the 18th century. The first systematic overview of older Croatian literature. The book begins with a comprehensive introduction by Vatroslav Jagić on Croatian Glagolitic

Content structure:

  • Introduction: Vatroslav Jagić – Croatian Glagolitic Literature (pp. 9–64)
  • Branko Vodnik covers the period from humanism (Marko Marulić, Juraj Šižgorić, etc.) through the Renaissance, Baroque (Ivan Gundulić, Ivan Bunić Vučić, Junije Palmotić) to the Enlightenment and the end of the 18th century.

The book represents the first modern synthetic history of Croatian literature written on a scientific level. Vodnik was among the first Croatian literary historians to observe literature systematically, taking into account the historical, social and cultural context, and not just the biographies of writers.

The work had a great resonance in its time because it filled a gap in Croatian philology. It is considered a classic work of Croatian literary historiography and a basic textbook for older Croatian literature until the emergence of more recent syntheses (e.g. Kombol, Frangeš).

This is the first comprehensive scientific history of Croatian literature of the modern era. Vodnik's approach is objective, clear, and concise, and the work has long served as a standard textbook at universities.

The book is now a rare antiquarian edition and is highly valued among collectors and literary historians.
