Velik je misterij života: dnevnik 1917.-1934.

Lucija Bakšić, Magdalena Blažić

The diary of Marija Vinski, written from 1917 to 1934, tells the extensive life story of an intellectual doctor about her struggle to find her own place in the sun.

Persistent in her desire for her work to have social weight, but very often hampered by various social obstacles and conventions, Marija Vinski writes in her diary reflections on her immediate everyday life and various considerations about numerous challenges such as choosing a study program, choosing friends and partners, the death and illness of people close to her, balancing motherhood and career, or continuing her education. Although in it she questions her own actions and ponders the “mystery of life”, for Marija, the diary, in addition to being a place of deep self-knowledge, also represents a place of cultural and professional hedonism, where her fascination with Vienna and Zagreb is permeated with many reflections on diverse literature and theater. In other words, Marija Vinski’s diary is a multidimensional mirror in which her entire life is reflected, while also serving as a foothold for building and understanding her identity, or rather as her second home. How much courage does it really take to achieve emancipation, how to survive one’s own writing, and how, in fact, to realize all those “days we have not lived” and perhaps never will? The answer lies in the imagination of the timeless heroine Marija Vinski, from whom, by reading her lavish diary, we can learn a lot.
