Umjetnost u Dalmaciji: XV. i XVI. vijek

Ljubo Karaman

A fundamental study by Ljubo Karaman on art in Dalmatia during the 15th and 16th centuries – the Renaissance period, when Dalmatia experienced an artistic flourishing under the influence of Italy and Venice. With 101 illustrations at the end of the book.

1,284 Art in Dalmatia: 15th and 16th centuries by Ljubo Karaman is a classic and fundamental work of Croatian art history. This book represents the first systematic and scientific treatment of Dalmatian art in the late Gothic and Renaissance periods.

Ljubo Karaman, one of the most important Croatian art historians, analyzes in detail the architecture, sculpture and painting of Dalmatia at a time when the Dalmatian cities (Split, Trogir, Šibenik, Dubrovnik, Zadar) were important centers of artistic creativity. He pays special attention to great masters such as Juraj Dalmatinac, Nikola Firentinac, Andrija Buvina and others, and shows how local genius, Byzantine traditions and the influences of the Italian Renaissance merged on Dalmatian soil.

The book is richly illustrated (with almost a hundred reproductions) and written in a clear, professional, but accessible style. It is considered a pioneering work that laid the foundations for the modern study of Dalmatian Renaissance art.

The 1933 edition (191 pages of text + plates) is today a sought-after bibliographic rarity. Copies in good condition are highly valued among collectors, art historians and lovers of Dalmatian heritage. It is an indispensable work for any serious collection of Croatian art literature.
