Russian Textbook for VI., VII. and VIII. Grades of Gymnasium from 1949 is a teaching aid intended for students of higher grades of gymnasium who studied Russian language. Published in the post-war period, the book was created in accordance with the then teaching programs that attached great importance to the study of Slavic languages and the introduction to Russian literature.
The textbook contains a selection of prose and poetry texts by Russian authors from different periods. The texts were selected to enable students to gradually acquire the language, expand their vocabulary and develop the skill of reading with comprehension. In addition to their literary value, many contributions provide insight into Russian history, culture, everyday life and social conditions.
The work also has an educational and cultural function. Through working on the texts, students improved their language knowledge, became familiar with literary styles and developed the ability to interpret literary works. As a school textbook, the reader testifies to the teaching methods and cultural ties of the Yugoslav and Soviet educational space immediately after World War II.
Rudolf Franjo Poljanec was a Croatian philologist, professor and author of several school textbooks for the Russian language, including Vježbenica ruskoga jezika, Pregled gramatike ruskoga jezika and Ruska čitanka za 6., 7. i 8. grad gimnazije. His textbooks were widely used in Croatian and Yugoslav schools after World War II.
