Slike iz rudstva

Mijo Kišpatić, Fran Tućan

A sought-after popular science work that presents the origin, types and economic importance of minerals and the development of mining. The authors simply explain minerals, metals and their applications. With seven color plates.

The book Pictures from Mining (1914), published by Mijo Kišpatić and Fran Tućan, is one of the most important Croatian popular science works dedicated to geology, mineralogy and mining. The work, intended for a wide range of readers, introduces the world of ores and minerals and their importance for the development of human society in an accessible and interesting way.

The authors introduce the reader to the formation of ore deposits, the geological processes that shape the earth's crust, and the methods of finding and exploiting mineral raw materials. Special attention is paid to the most important metals and ores, including gold, silver, iron, copper, lead and aluminum, as well as non-metallic raw materials such as sulfur, salt, coal and oil.

The work not only presents scientific facts, but also shows the economic and social role of mining throughout history. The development of mining techniques, working conditions in mines and the influence of mineral wealth on the progress of industry and civilization are described. Particularly interesting are the chapters on precious stones and the then new scientific discoveries related to radioactive elements.

Numerous illustrations and a clear presentation make it easier to understand complex natural phenomena. As a combination of scientific instruction, technical culture and economic history, Pictures from Mining today represents a valuable document of the development of geological and mining knowledge in Croatia at the beginning of the 20th century.
