Das Haus Vermorel. Ein algerischer Familienroman

Das Haus Vermorel. Ein algerischer Familienroman

Jeanne Montupet

"Das Haus Vermorel" is a classic family novel (saga) that follows the life of the Franco-Spanish farming family Vermorel through three generations in Algeria during the colonial period.

The story begins with the establishment of a farm in the Algerian countryside, where the family struggles with difficult conditions, nature, the local population and mutual relationships. Through the destinies of strong characters – ambitious men, strong women and their children – the novel depicts ups and downs, loves, conflicts, successes and tragedies in an exotic but harsh environment.

The work is richly colored, vivid and dynamic, without excessive intellectual weight – typically high-quality French entertainment literature that takes the reader through the history, culture and everyday life of colonial Algeria. The focus is on human destinies, family ties and adaptation to a new country.

The novel is originally French, and the German translation (from the 1950s) was very successful as a solid, interesting family novel.
