Automatic for the People

Automatic for the People

R. E. M.

R.E.M.'s eighth studio album from 1992 delivers a dark, acoustic atmosphere and timeless classics like "Everybody Hurts" and "Man on the Moon."

Released in October 1992, Automatic for the People is the eighth studio album by American alternative rock band R.E.M. Considered one of the greatest albums of the 1990s and the undisputed crowning achievement of their career, the material features a mature, introspective, and predominantly acoustic sound that explores profound themes of transience, loss, memory, and hope.

Following the huge commercial success of its predecessor Out of Time, the band created a much darker and more layered soundscape. The album is particularly notable for its lush string arrangements by former Led Zeppelin member John Paul Jones. The album is packed with anthological songs, including the globally acclaimed heart-wrenching ballad Everybody Hurts, the tribute to legendary comedian Andy Kaufman Man on the Moon, and melancholic yet beautiful numbers Drive, The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite, and Nightswimming.

"Automatic for the People" enjoyed unanimous critical acclaim and massive global commercial success, achieving multi-platinum sales. This CD release represents the pinnacle of alternative music of the nineties and remains an absolutely indispensable gem in the collection of every top rock fan.
