The novel “City of Pleasure” by French writer and prominent journalist Serge Groussard (winner of the Prix Femina award) is a multi-layered prose work in which the author explores the flip side of modern life, human passions and the search for happiness. The plot is set in a dynamic urban environment that simultaneously offers apparent pleasures, but also brings deep loneliness and moral dilemmas for its protagonists. Groussard, with his recognizable, psychologically sharp and realistic style, places characters struggling with their own vices, emotional voids and social expectations at the center of the narrative. The titular “city of pleasure” functions as a powerful metaphor for the race for material and sensory pleasures, while in the background lies existential tension and longing for authentic human relationships. The author skillfully depicts the contrasts between the glitter of nightlife and the inner crisis states of the individual. Translated and published in our region in the early 1960s, this novel confirmed Groussard's storytelling skills and attracted readers inclined to psychological novels about the challenges of modern society.
