U trećem romanu iz serijala, Tarzan se suočava s jednim od svojih najtežih izazova. Njegov zakleti neprijatelj Nikolas Rokoff ponovno se pojavljuje, ovog puta s jezivim planom – otima Tarzanovu suprugu Jane i njihova sina Jacka, s ciljem da se osveti.

Tarzan biva zatočen na udaljenom otoku bez načina za bijeg. No, ne bi bio gospodar džungle da se ne zna snaći. Ondje se sprijatelji s raznim životinjama – divljim panterom Sheetahom, majmunima i gorilom Akutom – koje ubrzo postaju njegova savezništva u misiji spašavanja. S tim neobičnim savezničkim čoporom, Tarzan uspijeva pobjeći s otoka i vraća se na afričko kopno.

Uz pomoć svojih "zvijeri", Tarzan prati trag Rokoffa kroz opasne predjele džungle. Kroz niz pustolovina, zasjeda i borbi, koristi svoju snalažljivost, snagu i vezu s prirodom da bi pronašao obitelj i osvetio se. Kulminacija romana donosi obračun s Rokoffom i konačno ponovno okupljanje s voljenima.

Roman snažno ističe temu čovjekove povezanosti s prirodom, prijateljstvo između čovjeka i životinja, te pobjedu dobrote nad zlom. Tarzanove "zvijeri" simboliziraju vjernost i sirovu snagu koja, kad je vođena pravdom, postaje sila dobra.
