„U svetu“ je drugi deo autobiografske trilogije Maksima Gorkog, objavljene 1916. godine. Trilogija obuhvata dela „Detinjstvo”, „U svetu” i „Moji univerziteti”, pružajući uvid u godine formiranja autora.

U ovom centralnom delu Gorki opisuje svoje adolescentske godine nakon bekstva iz disfunkcionalne porodice. Suočava se sa izazovima samostalnog života, radeći na raznim poslovima kao što su prodavac, brodski radnik i štamparski šegrt. Kroz ova iskustva upoznaje različite ljude iz nižih slojeva društva, što oblikuje njegovu društvenu svest i empatiju prema potlačenim.​

Gorki realistično prikazuje surovost života mladog čoveka prepuštenog samom sebi u carskoj Rusiji. Istovremeno, on ističe važnost samoučenja i ličnog razvoja uprkos nepovoljnim okolnostima. Ovaj deo trilogije naglašava formiranje Gorkijevih političkih uverenja i književnog senzibiliteta, koji će kasnije karakterisati njegov opus.​

„U svetu” nije samo lična priča, već i svedočanstvo o tadašnjim društvenim prilikama, pružajući čitaocima autentičan uvid u život običnih ljudi i izazove sa kojima su se suočavali.
