The novel U registratura is Kovačić's best work, in which he deals with the problem of the transition from the peasant class to the lordly class.
In the register is the most famous novel by Ante Kovačić. The novel was published in sequels during 1888 in the magazine Vijenac. According to critics, the most important Croatian novel of the 19th century, along with August Šenoa's "Peasant's Revolt".
The book deals with topics such as national identity, political aspirations and cultural influences, and offers a critical view of historical events and their consequences for the Croatian people.
